S 312 - An Act to promote fair campaign practices

Documents & Status: Text of Senate 312 | Status of the bill

This legislation strives to restore and promote honest dialogue to our political campaigns. Similar to a program currently offered in California, it establishes a “Code of Fair Campaign Practices” program, to be administered by the Office of Campaign & Political Finance. This strictly volunteer program would ask candidates to commit to fair and open campaigns, and the basic principles of decency, honesty, and fair play that we’ve got a moral obligation to observe and uphold. This in no way would replace the need for vigorous campaigning by candidates, and would not seek to remove hearty debate from our democracy, but would instead put in a context of truthfulness and fairness. Candidates would sign pledges containing numerous clauses aimed at adhering to these principles, which would be available when obtaining nomination forms. Upon completion and submission of the form, the name of any candidate subscribing to these principles would be made public.
