Resources for Returning Veterans

Upon your return...

  • Unpack your gear as soon as possible and ensure proper cleaning and serviceability.  Immediately turn in any contraband or sensitive items you may have.
  • Ensure any promotions, awards, or re-enlistments are recorded in your permanent 201 file and review your promotion packet.
  • Rescind any Power of Attorney you may have outstanding.
  • Complete your travel voucher with your unit because your are entitled to per diem and other allowances.  Make sure it is done accurately and correctly.

Motor Vehicle

  • Check your driver's license and vehicle tabs to make sure that neither your license nor registration has expired during your absence.  In addition, be sure to check any speed limit changes.  
  • Reactivate your vehicle insurance to reflect your current status.
  • Have preventative maintenance checks and services done to your vehicle, especially if it has set for a year or more.

Health Care

  • Verify registration in TRICARE for you and your family.
  • To ensure your personal success, adopt a healthy lifestyle and exercise regularly.

Employment

  • If you are a veteran applying for a job, you can complete a set of paperwork that may qualify your potential employer for a tax credit if you are hired.  The paperwork must be supplied to the potential employer before a job offer is made.  "For-profit" employers in Massachusetts that plan to hire certain low-income or disabled veterans may be eligible for a $2,400 tax credit.
  • If you were employed before duty, notify your employer of your return to set up a new start date.

Education

  • If you were a student prior to serving, check your status upon your return.  
  •  Check to see if there are any scholarships available through the school or community.

Finance

  • File for your Massachusetts Welcome Home Bonus.  You will be eligible to collect a grant for $1,000 for service in Iraq or Afghanistan or $500 for six months service in or outside the limits of the Continental United States other than for training.  
  • Notify your creditors that you are no longer eligible for the 6% interest rate.  Creditors may demand the remainder of the unpaid interest amount if your choose not to contact them.  
  • Fill out your state and federal income taxes.  Be sure to use any benefits or exemptions available through the Commonwealth.
