Southbridge Airport Commission receives two grants from the Massachusetts Aeronautics Commission

May 27, 2005 - The Southbridge Municipal Airport has been awarded more than $146,000 in state and federal funding grants for the Installation of a Medium Intensity Taxiway Lighting System (MITLS) and for the purchase of Airport Maintenance Equipment by the Massachusetts Aeronautics Commission, according to Senator Richard T. Moore (D-Uxbridge).

The grants will be used to install a medium intensity taxiway lighting system along the entire length of the parallel taxiway and to purchase equipment that will allow for maintaining more than 148 acres of land and heavy brush.

“Southbridge Airport Commission officials should be commended for their efforts in keeping their airport among the most efficient in the state,” said Senator Moore. “Through these grants they can continue their work in maintaining the safety for all those who will utilize the airport.”

The airport has a full-length parallel taxiway which runs 3,500 foot long. The taxiway was constructed in 1989 and is currently not lighted. The recent master plan recommends the taxiway to be lighted per FAA Advisory guidelines.

The equipment grant will be used to purchase a heavy duty rotary cutter, boom mower and backhoe.
