July 13, 2005 - Senior officials from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services held a public forum on the new Medicare prescription drug benefit on July 13 at 3:00 p.m. on the Worcester Campus of Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences. The event was part of a national bus tour by the nation’s “top docs” to raise public awareness about the Prescription Drug Coverage benefit that will go into effect on January 1, 2006. Participating in the event were Dr. Mark McClellan, the Administrator for the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, Dr. Julie Gerberding, the Director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Dr. Richard H. Carmona, the Surgeon General, and Dr. Elias A. Zerhouni, Director of the National Institutes of Health. MCPHS President Charles F. Monahan, Jr. gave greetings in the College’s main auditorium at 19 Foster Street. The Medicare Prescription Drug, Improvement, and Modernization Act of 2003 created Prescription Drug Benefits that will offer a variety of choices for prescription drug coverage plans with a monthly premium. MCPHS-Worcester was chosen to host the Medicare tour because the College is the home of MassMedLine, a toll-free prescription drug information service operated in partnership with the Commonwealth of Massachusetts Executive Office of Elder Affairs. Founded in 1823, Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences, with campuses in Boston and Worcester, Massachusetts and Manchester, New Hampshire, is the largest college of pharmacy in the US. Today, in addition to its traditional programs in pharmacy, the college offers a growing list of health-related degree programs including nursing, physician assistant studies, radiologic sciences, health psychology, pre-medical and health studies, and dental hygiene. |
