Moore pushes to restore funds for essential programs |

July 14, 2005 - Last week, Governor Romney’s veto pen slashed several important initiatives in the FY 06 budget appropriations causing Senator Richard T. Moore (D-Uxbridge) to push legislative leaders for overrides. This evening, the Legislature took up more than 40 vetoes and restored fully funding to certain line items recommended by the Legislature. “I was very disappointed that the Governor cut funding for these essential services from this budget,” said Moore. “Overriding some of these vetoes is only the beginning our responsibility to those citizens who utilize these great programs.” Governor Romney issued 81 vetoes, encompassing $110 million in reductions, when he signed the $23.8 billion budget on June 30. Today, Moore was successful in the Senate to override the Governor’s vetoes to restore funding for services including the following line items:
Overrides must originate in the House of Representatives and only after the House has taken action can the Senate move on these matters. The House will continue to take up vetoes next week. Moore also said he will continue to join with other senators to seek restoration of original budget amounts on certain line items.
