Moore’s bill clarifies the boundaries of the Purple Heart Highway

BOSTON, September 20, 2005 - Today, the Senate engrossed legislation sponsored by Senator Richard T. Moore (D-Uxbridge) that limits the existing "Purple Heart Highway" designation of Route 146 in Worcester County, to the segment between the Rhode Island state line and Boston Road in Sutton.

“I am pleased that the Senate agreed to engross the bill today,” said Senator Moore. “This amendment simply seeks to clarify the boundaries of the “Purple Heart Highway” in order to preserve its designation.”

In 1961, the Legislature designated the Massachusetts portion Route 146 from the city of Worcester to the Rhode Island boundary as the “Purple Heart Highway” to honor those Massachusetts veterans who received the Award of the Purple Heart for being wounded in combat.

In the year 2000, the Legislature designated a portion of Route 146 from Brosnihan Square in Worcester to Boston Road in the Town of Sutton as the “Blackstone Valley Parkway” to compliment the improvements made to sections of this roadway including the new Turnpike Interchange in Millbury and further enhance the area’s reputation as a tourist destination.

After consulting with officials at the Mass Highway Department, it was determined that although only a portion of the roadway was designated in the year 2000 that law superceded the 1961 designation. In order to keep the Purple Heart Highway designation, Senator Moore filed this bill.

The bill will now go to the House for consideration. More information on Senator Moore’s issues can be obtained by checking his web site www.senatormoore.com.
