Source: State House News Service

STATE CAPITOL BRIEFS, September 21, 2005 - The Education Committee, Wednesday, endorsed legislation aimed at determining to what extent civic education still exists in Massachusetts. The bill filed by Sen. Richard T. Moore (D-Uxbridge) establishes a 23-member commission to study the status of civic engagement from kindergarten through undergraduate college. The bill (S 340) calls for an “assessment of the civic knowledge of graduates of the public high schools of the Commonwealth,” and an assessment of the implementation of the history and social studies curriculum frameworks by the Department of Education and school districts. The commission would be required to report back to the Legislature by Nov. 2006. The bill now goes to the full Senate.
