Local schools receive grant money from the Department of Revenue

BOSTON, September 27, 2005 - Local public schools have been awarded a total of $21,290 in funding from the Underground Storage Tank Petroleum Product Cleanup Fund, a unit of the Department of Revenue, according to Senator Richard T. Moore (D-Uxbridge).

“These towns are in need dire need of this funding to improve their current underground storage tanks,” said Senator Moore. “I am pleased to see the grants awarded to these towns to help prevent environmental contamination.”

Grant recipients and total funding include:

  • Douglas Intermediate Elementary School $7, 394.00
  • Hopedale Public School $12,646.00
  • Southbridge High School $1,250.00

According to the DOR, the funding will be used to prevent the need for environmental cleanup actions and to expedite environmental cleanup actions by providing partial reimbursement to owners or operators of Underground Storage Tanks (UST) systems for costs, expenses and other obligations incurred as a result of releases of petroleum products from UST’s. The fund also allows for reimbursement for any claims for bodily injury, property damage, and damage to natural resources which are assessed against an owner or operator of an UST.

“I would like to thank The Department of Revenue and the Underground Storage Tank Petroleum Product Cleanup Fund Administrative Review Board for the grant that has been awarded to the Douglas Intermediate Elementary School said Representative Paul Kujawski (D-Webster).

Representative Mark Carron (D-Southbridge) said "Deteriorating underground storage tanks continue to be a concern, and an effort throughout Massachusetts. My colleagues and I are pleased to announce the awarding of this money to help in the remedy. It will help to hedge against resources being robbed from other programs in this necessary endeavor."
