Moore’s wine doggie bag bill receives favorable report

BOSTON, September 30, 2005 - Legislation sponsored by Senator Richard T. Moore (D-Uxbridge) that would allow consumers to take unfinished bottle of wine home was given a favorable report by the Committee on Consumer Protection and Professional Licensure Wednesday.

“This bill’s aim is to encourage consumers to make a wise choice, said Moore. “If the customers feel they have had too much to drink and would like to bring the rest home, they should be able to ask the wait staff to doggie bag their wine. The bill stresses the importance and awareness of responsible drinking.”

Senate Bill 210, “An Act relative to the on-premise consumption of wine,” gives the patrons eating at a hotel or restaurant an opportunity to take home the unfinished wine they ordered during a meal. The bottle of wine must be sealed before leaving the premises. The legislation, however, does not specifically state the how bottle will be re-sealed, but gives the Alcoholic Beverages Control Commission the responsibility to draft regulations. Additionally, if a patron appears to be intoxicated, the server now has the right to refuse allowing patrons to bring the bottle of wine.

The bill will now go to the full Senate for consideration. More information on Senator Moore’s issues can be obtained by checking his web site www.senatormoore.com
