Moore visits Oxford’s Clara Barton School |

November 15, 2005 - On November 14, 2005, in honor of the National Legislators Back to School program, Senator Richard T. Moore (D-Uxbridge) visited the Clara Barton School in Oxford. During his visit, Senator Moore talked to approximately 160 third and fourth grade students about his role as a legislator and their roles as citizens of Massachusetts. “It is important for students to be able to put a face to government and hear about the law making process from a legislator,” Moore said after his visit. “This personalizes the process and will hopefully motivate students to learn more about government at all levels and to get involved.” This marks the 7th annual celebration of the National Conference of State Legislators’ America’s Back to School Day, which promotes representative democracy and a better understanding of lawmakers and their responsibilities. The program was piloted in four states, Massachusetts being one of them, and Senator Moore took the lead role in introducing the idea to his Senate colleagues and to students and teachers in his district. During his presentation at the Clara Barton School, Senator Moore spoke specifically about his role as a legislator and the impact government has on the lives of students and adults alike. Then, after a brief video presentation outlining the legislative process, Moore took questions from the third and fourth graders. “I am always quite impressed by the wonderful questions students of all ages ask. Today, for example students wanted to know everything from the difference between a mayor and a senator to what my job is like, how stressful it is, and what I get paid. It shows that they are curious about civics and I hope they will continue to learn and get involved in government as they grow older,” Moore explained.
