Moore receives first-ever Betsy Lehman Patient Safety Recognition Award

December 7, 2005 - This week, Senator Richard T. Moore (D-Uxbridge), Senate Chairman of the Legislative Committee on Health Care Financing, received the first-ever Betsy Lehman Patient Safety Recognition Award from the Betsy Lehman Center for Patient Safety and Medical Error Reduction. The award was presented on December 5th at the Center's 2nd Annual Meeting in Waltham.

The award was established this year by the center to recognize leadership and innovation in patient safety, including public awareness, education and promotion of systems-based solutions through the implementation of best practices.

“I am honored to receive this prestigious award from the Betsy Lehman Center,” said Senator Moore. “I have great respect for center’s work of tirelessly addressing patient safety and preventing medical errors. Through their ongoing efforts, and those of public and private agencies, our Commonwealth’s world class health care system is stronger and safer then ever.”

Senator Moore was the original sponsor of the legislation creating the Betsy Lehman Center for Patient Safety and Medical Error Reduction. He fought for its passage in the Legislature and, upon its passage, fought for the Center’s establishment and the funding necessary to make it effective.

The Betsy Lehman Center for Patient Safety and Medical Error Reduction was launched in 2002. A division of the state Department of Public Health, the center works to improve patient safety and reduce medical errors through coordinating state agency initiatives, promoting ongoing collaboration between the public and private sectors, coordinating state and federal patient safety programs, and promoting patient safety through educating both health care providers and patients.

The Center is named for Boston Globe health reporter, Betsy Lehman, who died in 1994 following a four-fold chemotherapy overdose.
