Senator Moore reminds citizens to install carbon monoxide detectors

January 5, 2006 - As many homeowners turn up the heat to keep their homes warm this winter, Senator Richard T. Moore (D-Uxbridge) reminds citizens of the importance of installing carbon monoxide detectors soon. A new law requires all residences that are heated with gas, oil or propane to install a battery-operated or plug-in detector by March 31, 2006. Building with multiple units will have until January 1, 2007 to meet the requirements.

“Carbon monoxide poisoning threatens many people each winter,” said Senator Moore. “I urge all residents to take immediate steps to ensure the safety of their families and loved ones. Installing the detectors now will prevent unintentional poisoning and future tragedies.”

Just last night, a Bellingham family suffered a high level of carbon monoxide intake at their home. The poisoning sent the father and 2-year old daughter to the hospital, killed a family cat and impaired their dog. They did not have carbon monoxide detectors installed in their home.

In honor of a 7 year-old Plymouth girl who died from carbon monoxide poisoning, the Legislature passed “Nicole’s Law.” Nicole Garofalo died after snow blocked a boiler exhaust vent in her family’s home.

In addition, although the current law does not require homes with wooden stoves to have carbon monoxide detectors, Senator Moore urges residents to consider installing it also.
