Senate passes Southbridge charter bill

January 5, 2006 - Legislation co-sponsored by Senator Richard T. Moore (D-Uxbridge) that clarifies Southbridge’s form of municipal organization and status was engrossed by the Senate today.

“I’m pleased that the Senate chose to quickly engross the bill that will clear up the confusion of town’s structure,” said Moore. “I’m confident it will be enacted by both branches and sent to the governor soon.”

The bill, filed by Representative Mark Carron (D-Southbridge) in September, and co-sponsored by Senator Moore, seeks to clarify language in the town’s charter regarding its municipal organization. In November 2004, the Town Council voted to request that the town’s legislators file this legislation to clarify Southbridge’s form of government after learning that the state perceived Southbridge as a city, because of the language contained in the charter. The council also noted that most of the people prefer Southbridge to remain a town form of government.

The bill will now goes back to the House for final enactment. If enacted by the House, Senator Moore is committed to enacting the bill in the Senate and sending it to the Governor’s desk as quickly as possible.
