Area Councils on Aging to receive grant funding

January 31, 2006 - Senator Richard T. Moore (D-Uxbridge) is pleased to report that the Executive Office of Elder Affairs will soon mail Formula Grant award notices to all fourteen Councils on Aging (COAs) in Senator Moore’s district. These towns are among 346 cities and towns in Massachusetts to receive grant awards.

“This funding will allow the Councils on Aging in my district to greatly contribute to the welfare of our seniors by providing meaningful activities, programs and services,” said Senator Moore. “I commend the work of all of these councils and wish them continued success in their efforts to help the elderly.”

District COAs to receive grant funding include: 

• Bellingham to receive $12,169 to employ friendly visiting and administrative/clerical staff, defray outreach costs and provide for site maintenance/repair, newsletter postage and conference/meeting attendance.

• Blackstone to receive $7,103 to employ a nutrition site manager and provide for conference/meeting attendance.

• Douglas to receive $4,109 provide for newsletter related costs, office postage/furnishings, site maintenance and improvements, program/office supplies and volunteer recognition.

• Dudley to receive $8,889 to defray newsletter, mileage and utility costs, and provide for postage, supplies, printing/copying, volunteer recognition/support and conference/meeting attendance.

• Hopedale to receive $6,351 to employ a senior center staff assistant and provide for volunteer recognition and support.

• Mendon to receive $3,569 to purchase office/program supplies and/or equipment and provide for (newsletter) postage, dues, mileage, conference/meeting attendance and volunteer recognition and support.

• Milford to receive $25,758 to employ program/transportation coordination and other staff, and provide for (newsletter) printing/distribution, software upgrading and conference/meeting attendance.

• Millville to receive $3,000 to produce/distribute the monthly newsletter, defray utilities and van operation costs and provide for site/office supplies, printing/copying, postage, dues, volunteer recognition and conference/meeting attendance.

• Northbridge to receive $13,249 to employ volunteer coordinator and outreach worker and defray newsletter costs.

• Oxford to receive $11,558 to pay for newsletter mailing, defray van (medical) transportation costs and provide for utilities, copier maintenance, dues, conference/meeting attendance and volunteer recognition and support.

• Southbridge to receive $18,796 to support the custodian/clerk-typist position, institute a wellness education series and continue to underwrite the (low impact) aerobic exercise and cardiac rehab programs.

• Sutton to receive $5,571 to defray the cost of fitness instruction and provide for (newsletter) postage, dues, volunteer recognition and conference/meeting attendance.

• Uxbridge to receive $8,406 to employ part-time escort/driver(s), provide additional hours for the van driver and pay for professional association membership.

• Webster to receive $19,911 to employ part-time administrative staff and a custodian, and provide for utilities, dues, conference/meeting attendance and copier maintenance.

Formula Grants are calculated at $5.87 per elder based on a municipality’s population over age 60 (2000 federal Census). Cites and towns awarded less than $3,000 are eligible to apply to the Executive Office of Elder Affairs to receive at least $3,000 regardless of the number of persons over the age of 60. Each COA determines its own priorities for expenditures from a broad range of eligible costs established by Elder Affairs.
