Senator Moore invites area citizens to a free vision screening & education day on Feb. 22nd

February 13, 2006 - Senator Richard T. Moore invites area citizens to a Free Vision Screening and Education Day sponsored by Prevent Blindness Massachusetts with the support of Allergan, on Wednesday, February 22, 2006, from 11:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. at the Milford Senior Center. Senator Moore will be on hand at the screening to answer questions and encourage area citizens to take part in the services offered.

“I am pleased to be involved and to host the Free Vision Screening and Education Day,” said Senator Moore. “It is important to improve the health of my constituents by providing vital information and services to protect them from the devastating effects of vision loss.”

According to the National Eye Institute, the number of Americans with age-related eye diseases and the vision impairment that results from such diseases is expected to double within the next three decades. The good news is that through early detection and treatment, most sight loss is preventable. It is therefore imperative that our citizens be vision screened or have an eye exam from an eye care professional and get any treatment they might need early before it is too late to prevent loss of vision, explained Senator Moore.

Complimentary informational literature will be provided by Prevent Blindness Massachusetts and Allergan. Alan Cregg, Executive Director of Prevent Blindness Massachusetts, will also be on hand to answer any sight related questions.

“Over 90,000 adults over the age of 40 in Massachusetts have one or more of the four age related eye diseases: macular degeneration, cataracts, diabetic retinopothy, or glaucoma that can result in permanent debilitating sight loss. As our adult population ages, more and more adults are at risk for one or more of these eye diseases,” said Cregg. “But there is hope. Through early detection and treatment the sight loss from these eye diseases can be in the worst case scenario slowed and in the best case scenario prevented. Saving your precious eye sight is in your hands.”

Prevent Blindness Massachusetts is an affiliate of Prevent Blindness America and is the only nonprofit organization in the state solely dedicated to saving sight through early detection vision screening, eye health and safety education, vision screening training and certification programs, and research.
