Senator Moore urges senior citizens to
enroll in Prescription Advantage before April 28 deadline
February 15, 2006 - Senator Richard T. Moore (D-Uxbridge) informs constituents that Prescription Advantage, the Commonwealth’s pharmacy assistance program will conduct an Open Enrollment March 15 through April 28. This is the first open enrollment since Prescription Advantage became a program that wraps around Medicare Part D, the new federal prescription drug benefit. “I am pleased that the Legislature and the Governor acted quickly to protect Medicare recipients who have yet to enroll in the federal Part D plan,” said Senator Moore. “This new law keeps those enrolled in Prescription Advantage eligible for the next several months. It’s the only fair thing to do considering the confusion over Part D.” The modified Prescription Advantage program supplements the Medicare prescription drug benefit for Medicare eligible individuals by helping pay for co-payments and coverage gaps for an individual’s Part D plan. Those with limited income may also receive help paying for Medicare Part D plan premiums. Prescription Advantage will also provide primary coverage that is comparable to Medicare Part D plans for those who are not eligible for Medicare. Prior to Jan. 1, 2006 when Medicare Part D took effect, Prescription Advantage provided primary coverage for seniors and younger disabled individuals who meet specific income requirements. As the Chairman of the Health Care Financing Committee and one of the principal sponsors of Prescription Advantage, Senator Moore helped push passage of this important “wrap around” legislation. Prescription Advantage is a prescription drug insurance plan that is available to all Massachusetts residents age 65 and older, as well as younger individuals with disabilities who meet income and employment guidelines. Members pay premiums, deductibles and co-payments based on their gross annual household income. “Prescription Advantage has been of great help to many of our seniors who are struggling with the high cost of prescription drugs that they need to live,” Senator Moore explained. I encourage citizens who were not eligible before to take advantage of the open enrollment period.
