Take charge of Massachusetts – and win $10,000
15th Annual Better Government Competition Rewards Taxpayers for Saving Tax Dollars

February 15, 2006 - Senator Richard T. Moore (D-Uxbridge) encourages constituents to take charge of government in Massachusetts. The Better Government Competition (BGC), sponsored by the Pioneer Institute with strong support from Senator Moore, offers cash rewards up to $10,000 for ideas that improve the quality of government services, while reducing their cost.

“Everyone has an interest in better government,” said Senator Moore. “I know that my constituents want to know their tax dollars are being well-spent. This competition is a great way to get involved, get your voices heard, and get recognized for your efforts.”

The Better Government Competition asks entrants to draft policy ideas for streamlining state and municipal government. Past winners have tackled such diverse problems as pollution control, Medicaid, child welfare, and the special education system. Since the first Better Government Competition, the implementation of winning ideas has saved Massachusetts taxpayers an estimated $300 million.

An independent panel of judges - drawn from academia, business, government, and the media - will reward proposals to streamline administration, consolidate functions, improve procurement, and/or enhance service quality and efficiency.

The winning entrant will receive a $10,000 prize, and runners-up will receive $1000 prizes. The BGC Awards Dinner, to be held in September of 2006, will announce the winners and celebrate their efforts on behalf of Massachusetts’ taxpayers.

“Getting the citizens of the Commonwealth more involved in thinking about the work of government and public service is a core piece of what a place like Pioneer is about,” said Jim Stergios, Executive Director of Pioneer Institute. “We greatly appreciate Senator Moore’s working with us to broaden our ability to attract good ideas from across the state.”

The Pioneer Institute, a nonpartisan, nonprofit public policy research organization, created the Better Government Competition in 1991. The Competition supports Pioneer’s broader mission, which is to reform government with a strong commitment to free-market principles and individual initiative.
