Moore announces FY 2007 Chapter 90 Highway Funds for Worcester and Norfolk District communities

March 31, 2006 - Senator Richard T. Moore (D-Uxbridge) announced today that the Romney Administration has released $120 million in state aid to the Commonwealth’s 351 cities and towns to upgrade local roads and bridges. Communities in Moore’s district will receive a combined total of $3.4 million in so-called Chapter 90 funds.

“Improving and maintaining our roads and bridges is a primary responsibility of government, and it is vital to our economy and our public safety,” Moore said. “I am pleased the administration released the local highway funding in time for the start of the construction season for the towns in my district.”

Each year, Chapter 90 funding is allocated to cities and towns based on a formula that takes into account the number of miles of local roadway, population and the employment rate in a given community. The funding is reimbursed to the communities on approved transportation projects as construction unfolds.

This $120 million in Chapter 90 funds is on top of a requirement for the Massachusetts Highway Department to spend at least $450 million a year on the statewide road and bridge program. For the past fiscal year, the state spent $501 million on the road and bridge program.
