Senator Moore observes National Older Americans Month with visits to area senior centers

April 13, 2006 - Throughout the months of April, May and June, Senator Richard T. Moore (D-Uxbridge) will visit area senior centers in honor of National Older Americans Month. These visits encompass a variety of events ranging from coffee with constituents to senior lunches.

President John F. Kennedy established National Older Americans Month in April of 1963 to raise awareness of the needs of America’s senior citizens, a designation that has been formally recognized by every subsequent sitting president. Originally titled, “Senior Citizens Month”, Jimmy Carter renamed the observance “Older Americans Month” and helped to firmly establish the tradition of using the month of May to honor the invaluable contributions of America’s many older Americans.

“Senior Citizens play a vital role in my district and indeed throughout Massachusetts,” said Moore. “They are often some of the most active and knowledgeable residents in the Commonwealth, making their voices particularly valuable to the leaders and policy makers in Boston. In honor of Elder Americans Month, it is only right that we reaffirm our commitment to the elders of Massachusetts and make sure that their voices are heard on Beacon Hill.”

Senator Moore kicks off his observance of Older Americans Month on April 26th in Dudley by hosting Coffee and Conversation with local seniors at the Dudley Senior Center and will spend May and part of June visiting other area senior centers.
