July 11, 200– Today, Senator Richard T. Moore (D-Uxbridge) blasted Governor Romney for making what he called “political choices” in vetoing important projects to the Worcester and Norfolk District. On Saturday, the governor slashed $573 million from the $25.7 billion Fiscal Year 2007 budget plan that he deemed “excessive.”
“I’m afraid the governor has lost sight of who he was elected to serve and the welfare of the citizens in Massachusetts,” said Moore said. “The budget we sent to him included many items that will benefit the people of the Worcester and Norfolk District. It’s disappointing to see his vetoes on local projects and programs are that important to the growth of these communities. I hope we will act quickly to override these vetoes.”
Among Governor Romney’s vetoes affecting area communities:
• Milford Recreation Program: $100,000 for the operations of a Milford recreation program.
• Transportation Pilot Program: $25,000 for a transportation pilot program in Hopedale.
• Business Retention Program: $75,000 for a business retention program in the town of Millville operated by the Blackstone Valley Chamber of Commerce.
• Tourism Grants: $50,000 to the Claflin Hill Symphony Orchestra; $300,000 for the Sturbridge Heritage and Preservation Partnership; $100,000 for a public safety program in Dudley; $50,000 for the restoration and repairs of the Historical Asa Waters Mansion in Milbury; $35,000 to the Bellingham historical commission renovations program; and $25,000 for the Sturbridge Area Tourist Association and $100,000 for Clara Barton Birthplace Museum Inc.;
• Southern Worcester Development Corporation: $100,000 grant to the Southern Worcester Development Corporation
• Public Safety Programs: $100,000 for a public safety program in Dudley and $25,000 for the Route 16/Hopedale Street public safety program in Hopedale
Both branches are expected to take up vetoes in the coming weeks. Overrides must originate in the House of Representatives and require a 2/3 vote in both houses. Moore said he will work with his House and Senate colleagues to seek restoration of original budget amounts on certain line items.
