July 27, 2006 – Senate President Robert E. Travaglini (D-Boston) will be the main speaker at the Milford Area Chamber of Commerce luncheon on October 18th, according to Senator Richard T. Moore (D-Uxbridge). The event will be held at the Radisson Hotel in Milford.
During his visit to the Milford area, Senator Moore and Representative Marie J. Parente (D-Milford) have arranged for the Senate President to visit several key locations in Hopedale and Milford to help him gain a first-hand understanding of local projects being championed by the two legislators.
“We are especially pleased to have one of the state’s top three leaders come to the Milford area to meet our constituents,” Moore and Parente state. “It’s a special opportunity for the people of our area to meet the Senate President,” Moore noted. “It’s also a great opportunity to gain the President’s understanding of the projects that Senator Moore and I have so vigorously advocated,” Parented added.
Following Travaglini’s address to the Milford Area Chamber of Commerce, Moore and Parente, joined by members of Hopedale’s Draper Re-Use Committee and Mr. Philip Shwachman owner of the former Rockwell/Draper property will take a driving tour through the mill site to view renovation and safety developments. The Senate President will then meet with the Draper Re-Use Committee to discuss efforts to ensure the safety of the current facility, and to help market the site for redevelopment. Both Moore and Parente have been meeting regularly with the committee for the past year in order to assist Hopedale residents in returning the property as an asset to the community.
The next stop on the tour will be a visit to Milford Area Medical Center to meet with leaders of the hospital staff and trustees. Travaglini and Moore have played a leading role in passage of the state’s new Health Care Reform law, and are interested in hearing the community hospital’s perspective on the reform and on the controversial issue of nurse staffing ratios.
Also on the agenda will be restoration of Milford Pond. Representative Parente, with Sen. Moore’s backing, has been leading state efforts to secure funding for the restoration of the pond. The two lawmakers want the Senate President to meet with the Milford Pond committee and residents who live around the pond to gain support for this critical environmental project. The meeting is scheduled for the Italian-American War Veterans post.
On the way to the Milford Pond meeting, Senator Travaglini will pay a visit to Oliva’s Market to say hello to “Babe” Oliva and his family. The Oliva’s are lifelong friends of the Travaglini family.
