Senator Moore, Nellie Twardzik Thompson, and Representative Paul Kujawski.

August 2, 2006 - Senator  Moore and Representative Paul Kujawski (D-Webster) welcomed Nellie Twardzik Thompson of Dudley to the State House. Moore and Kujawski, as well as their Senate and House colleagues, recognized and commended Nellie for her outstanding athletic accomplishments.

Nellie gained national recognition in the 1930’s as the only girl in the United States to play on a high school boys’ baseball team for Bartlett High School in Webster. At age 14, she was asked to play first base on the former Dudley Athletic Club Team and was a top guard on the Bartlett Girls’ Basketball team, lettering all three years. She won her letter in boys’ baseball and girls’ basketball, but she was the only girl amid the 21 inductees to the Bartlett Sportsman’s Brotherhood.

In 2004, Nellie was named as the recipient of the Stasia Czernicki Sportswoman award and copies of her scrapbooks constitute the “Nellie Twardzik File” in the National Baseball Library at the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, NY.
