August 10, 2006 - Representative Paul Kujawski and Senator Richard T. Moore presented a check for
$288,705 to the Harrington Memorial Hospital. The funds are part of an allocation designed to strengthen local community hospitals. The Distressed Provider Expendable Trust fund is the source of the funding. Both Moore and Kujawski had been instrumental in providing for the fund's allocation to Harrington and to other community hospitals.
During the presentation, Senator Moore noted that Harrington Memorial Hospital is currently a disproportionate provider since it delivers an unusually high amount of uncompensated and free medical care to its community. Moore is the Chairman of the Committee on Health Care Financing in the Massachusetts Senate. His expertise in healthcare has been recognized when he was appointed Visiting Professor in Health Policy in the graduate school of Bridgewater (MA) State College.
Hospital CEO Richard Mangion thanked the legislators for their consistent concern about community hospitals. "We are one of the few remaining independent community hospitals and legislative support is critical to our success. We have provided for our community for 75 years now and wish to continue to do so in the future"
Bernard Kingsley, Director of Development for HMH, indicated that despite difficult financial times, the hospital has embarked on an expansion / renovation plan. We need to be ready to meet the needs of our community in years to come" said Kingsley.
Representative Paul Kujawski has frequently visited the hospital and spoken to staff about health care for citizens of all ages. He indicated that "health care policy is critical to our citizens. I need to stay current not just through reading but also by speaking to those on the front lines". He is a member of the Committee on Rules as well as the joint Committee on Education. He is also a director for the Webster-Dudley Boys and Girls Club. When asked about Harrington, Kujawski commented that "my mother worked here at Harrington for more than thirty years, and I was born at Harrington Memorial Hospital, so I have always felt close to this hospital".
