School nurses receive permanent recognition on Beacon Hill

October 2, 2006...The Senate today enacted legislation sponsored by Senator Richard T. Moore (D-Uxbridge) and Representative Jennifer L. Flanagan (D-Leominster) to install a plaque in Nurses Hall at the State House to honor school nurses in Massachusetts on the 100th anniversary of school nursing in the Commonwealth.

“Throughout the 100-year history of school nursing, the roles of school nurses have changed significantly,” said Moore. “Today, school nurses must provide more exclusive services to address the different needs of each student. I am pleased we will honor the efforts of school nurses by exhibiting a permanent commemoration in Nurses Hall.”

"I am happy to see school nurses receive this distinguished recognition celebrating the past 100 years,” said Flanagan. “It is my hope that when visitors see this plaque displayed, they will remember how important a role that a school nurse plays in a child's overall health.” She added the state Art Commission will determine the size and content of the final plaque.

Senator Moore, Chair of the Legislature’s Committee on Health Care Financing, has been a long-time leader in efforts to improve school health programs and access to care. Last month, as students returned to school, health advocates throughout the state joined Moore at school-based health center event at Blackstone Valley Regional Vocational Technical High School to remind everyone of the important of promoting healthy school and healthy students.

In 2001, Senator Moore filed legislation to install a plaque in Nurses Hall at the State House to honor Clara Barton, founder of the American Red Cross, teacher, national heroine and native of Oxford, Massachusetts.
