October 4, 2006, Boston...Senator Richard T. Moore (D-Uxbridge) was honored at the State House today with the 1st Annual Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences Health Care Leadership Award, which was created this year to honor individuals in the Commonwealth who have made significant and lasting contributions to the quality of health care received by the citizens of Massachusetts. The award was given during a ceremony to commemorate the fifth anniversary of MassMedLine, a toll-free prescription hotline operated by the College.
“I am honored to receive this special award from the Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences,” said Senator Moore. “Through the College's hard work and dedication with the MassMedLine program, many individuals are receiving critical information first-hand. I look forward to continue working with the College in further providing quality health care to all our citizens in the state."
Senator Moore is Chair of the influential Joint Committee on Health Care Financing in the Massachusetts General Court. He was among the principal authors who crafted the landmark Massachusetts Health Care Reform Law, as well as the legislation that created MassMedLine, a toll free information service for access to prescription drug coverage and Medicare Part D information. The hotline is operated by Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences under contract with the Massachusetts Executive Office of Elder Affairs.
“It is truly and honor and a privilege to give this award to Senator Moore, a person for whom MassMedLine would not exist without,” said Charles F. Monahan Jr., President of Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences. “Senator Moore continues to work tirelessly to improve health care access for citizens of the Commonwealth, and that hard work has enabled MassMedLine help hundreds of consumers pay for their prescription medications.”
In addition to this award, MassMedLine also announced today that it has received a two-year grant from AstraZeneca to support its call center and education and outreach efforts. “We believe that discovering, developing and marketing good medicines isn’t good enough if patients can’t get them, that’s why we are proud to support MassMedLine and its important work helping those most in need in our community access prescription coverage and assistance programs that can help them,” said Rod Stull, Executive Director and Plant Manager for AstraZeneca’s Westborough site.
