November 6, 2006...Senator Richard T. Moore (D-Uxbridge) expressed strong support for a proposal to establish the Bernat Mill Historic Mill Overlay District during a tour of the property last Friday with owners Leonard Fournier and Jack Tweed. “The project being proposed by the developers of the Bernat Mill seems completely in sync with the town’s vision for historic preservation and economic development in the downtown area,” the Senator stated. “I am impressed with the quality of the current commercial tenants and artisans, and it seems that appropriate residential development would be very compatible,” he added. The proposed establishment of the Historic Mill Overlay District would permit the development of up to 100 condominiums, but no more than 25 a year. “It’s welcome news that the developers don’t anticipate the housing to add new economic burdens for the town, but will enhance the local tax base significantly.” Senator Moore noted. “Like the redevelopment of the Waucantuck and Stanley Woolen Mills, this project is the proverbial win-win initiative that helps Uxbridge to develop with the historic mill property as the foundation for economic growth,” Moore stated. The November 21 Special Town Meeting is expected to consider the Historic Mill Overlay District proposal. |
