November 16, 2006...On October 2, 2006, Senator Richard T. Moore (D-Uxbridge) joined with officials from the University of Massachusetts Medical School in honoring researcher Craig C. Mello, PhD for receiving the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for 2006. Along with his colleague Dr. Andrew Fire of Stanford University, they were awarded by the Nobel Assembly at Karolinska Institutet for their discoveries related to RNA interference. “Dr. Mello’s incredible contribution to the breakthrough of RNA’s impact in biological research changed the science field forever,” said Moore. “This prestigious award was deservingly given to two remarkable individuals for their amazing discovery that will continue to advance and refine research in the future.” Mello received his BS from Brown University in 1982 and his PhD from Harvard University in 1990. He was a postdoctoral fellow at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in the laboratory of Dr. James Priess. He joined the faculty of the University of Massachusetts Medical School in 1994.
