Senator Moore announces publication of League of Women Voters’ Directory of Civic Engagement

November 29, 2006... Senator Richard T. Moore (D-Uxbridge) announced today that the League of Women Voters of Massachusetts has published a second edition of their Directory of Civic Engagement and Leadership Development Programs for Massachusetts Youth.

“Helping young people understand what it means to vote in a democracy and what ‘democracy’ itself means, is part of the job of state legislators,” said Moore. “This directory is a fantastic resource to engage youths to get involved government by highlighting programs about the electoral and political processes.”

Moore, who has been a key advocate for improving younger people’s understanding of state government, has participated in NCSL Program –“America’s Legislator Back to School Day” which proved very successful.

Senator Moore has been championing the need for civic education at the state and national level for many years. Additionally, he is the lead sponsor of legislation to establish a state-wide commission on civic engagement and learning. The bill passed in October but was amended and returned to the Legislature by Governor Romney who does not approve of creating the commission. Senator Moore hopes the House and Senate will reject the governor’s amendment and will send the bill back to Romney in the coming weeks.

The League of Women Voters of Massachusetts Citizen Education Fund is a nonpartisan educational trust whose mission is to encourage the informed and active participation of citizens in government. The League has compiled this directory as a resource for young people interested in civic engagement, citizen participation in politics and government, and leadership development. Though each program is different, each in some way provides young people with the tools and motivation to participate in the democratic process later in their lives.
