Top 10 issues facing the new Legislature in 2007

November 28, 2006...When the 185th Massachusetts General Court convenes on January 3, 2007, it will face a long agenda of pressing issues demanding attention with varying degrees of urgency. Many of the issues facing the new Governor and Legislature will be ones that have been with us in one form or another for several years, but the arrival of a new Governor and administration may well find these issues cast in a different light with different views creating new proposed solutions. The major themes are, for the most part, themes that other state legislatures across the Nation will also face. Fortunately, every state legislator in America belongs to the National Conference of State Legislatures, an organization that helps us to learn how other states are addressing problems that also confront the people of Massachusetts, just as we are being asked to tell lawmakers in other states about our recently passed health care reform legislation.

Senator Moore announces publication of League of Women Voters’ Directory of Civic Engagement

November 29, 2006... Senator Moore announced today that the League of Women Voters of Massachusetts has published a second edition of their Directory of Civic Engagement and Leadership Development Programs for Massachusetts Youth.

Ambulatory Surgical Centers/MRI Special Commission to hold hearing on Nov. 28th

November 21, 2006...The special commission on ambulatory surgical centers/ MRIs on Tuesday, November 28th at 1:30 pm in Room A-1 of the State House. Paul Dreyer from the Department of Public Health will be addressing the commission on the certificate of need regulatory program in Massachusetts. 


Heritage State Park receives grant money

November 20, 2006...State Representative Jennifer Callahan (D-Sutton) and State Senator Richard T. Moore (D-Uxbridge) are pleased to jointly announce that the Blackstone River & Canal Heritage State Park in Uxbridge will be receiving grant money totaling $165,440. The funds have been awarded through a competitive process by the State Office of Public Private Partnerships (OPPP)’s FY 2007 Matching Funds Program.

Moore congratulates Nobel Prize Winner, UMass Researcher Craig Mello, PhD

November 16, 2006...On October 2, 2006, Senator Moore joined with officials from the University of Massachusetts Medical School in honoring researcher Craig C. Mello, PhD for receiving the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for 2006. Along with his colleague Dr. Andrew Fire of Stanford University, they were awarded by the Nobel Assembly at Karolinska Institutet for their discoveries related to RNA interference.

Bridgewater State student from Mendon interns for Senator Moore

Lord, a senior at Bridgewater State College majoring in Political Science, has been working for the senator and his staff on a variety of legislative and local issue projects. While interning, Lord was also invited to participate in the Citizens Legislative Seminar at the State House. The bi-annual seminar series, developed and presented by the State House Legislative Education Office, is designed to help constituents learn more about the workings of the Massachusetts Legislature.

Renewing your driver's license may get a lot tougher

November 15, 2006...The days of renewing your driver's license on the Internet could be over in 2008.

Regulations expected to be issued at the end of this year by the Department of Homeland Security will spell out a new, stricter set of requirements governing how states may issue driver's licenses and identification cards.

Real ID needs real reforms

November 13, 2006...After May 11, 2008, come prepared when you renew your driver’s license at the Registry of Motor Vehicles. You will not be able to renew it on line. Before going to the Registry, find your original birth certificate and make sure there isn't any variation in your name (William, Will, Bill) between your birth record, Social Security card and any state you have ever held a license in. Make sure you have the legal documents that verify any name changes. Oh, yes, and bring your checkbook…proposed new licenses or ID cards may cost 2 to 3 times more than they do today…unless the federal government puts its money where its mouth is.

Doctors, patients excited about new cancer center

November 13, 2006...Nearly 20 years after beating breast cancer, Louise Reneau learned she had bone cancer in her pelvis. 

Faced with unwelcome task of fighting cancer twice, the 53-year-old Northbridge resident credits her oncologist, Dr. Mona Kaddis of the Milford Regional Medical Center, with keeping her spirits up.

Legislature approves Moore's emergency appointments amendment 

November 9, 2006...On a busy Thursday afternoon, the Legislature took action on many matters at the long-awaited Joint Constitutional Convention including one important amendment sponsored by Senator Moore. The amendment would give full power and authority to the Legislature to provide for prompt and temporary succession to elective or appointed public offices if the incumbents are unavailable for carrying out on their duties because of a disaster caused by an enemy attack.

Dudley receives library construction grants, moves up on waiting list

November 8, 2006...The Pearle L. Crawford Memorial Library in Dudley has been awarded $1,729,153 in the 2004-2005 grant round from the Massachusetts Public Library Construction Program administered by the Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners (MBLC) according to Senator  Moore and Representative Paul Kujawski (D-Webster). The grant is a partial award totaling $2,314,574. The library is now in the top spot on the waiting list for the remaining $585,421.

Senator Moore calls for regulation of physician/nurse work hours

November 8, 2006... “If the medical profession can’t regulate itself, and it seems that they can’t, government will have to step in to protect patients and the health professionals themselves,” a key Massachusetts state legislator told participants attending the 134th Annual Conference of the American Public Health Association (APHA) meeting at the Massachusetts Convention Center in Boston this week.

The town of Bellingham has been awarded a $29,830 this fiscal year from the Smart Growth Technical Assistance Grant Program administered by the Executive Office of Environmental Affairs according to Senator Moore and Representative Jennifer M. Callahan (D-Sutton). The grant is part of $896,383 in assistance awarded to 50 communities across the state.
