Top 10
issues facing the new Legislature in 2007
November 28,
2006...When the 185th Massachusetts General
Court convenes on January 3, 2007, it will
face a long agenda of pressing issues
demanding attention with varying degrees of
urgency. Many of the issues facing the new
Governor and Legislature will be ones that
have been with us in one form or another for
several years, but the arrival of a new
Governor and administration may well find
these issues cast in a different light with
different views creating new proposed
solutions. The major themes are, for the
most part, themes that other state
legislatures across the Nation will also
face. Fortunately, every state legislator in
America belongs to the National Conference
of State Legislatures, an organization that
helps us to learn how other states are
addressing problems that also confront the
people of Massachusetts, just as we are
being asked to tell lawmakers in other
states about our recently passed health care
reform legislation.

Real ID
needs real reforms
November 13,
2006...After May 11, 2008, come prepared
when you renew your driver’s license at
the Registry of Motor Vehicles. You will not
be able to renew it on line. Before going to
the Registry, find your original birth
certificate and make sure there isn't any
variation in your name (William, Will, Bill)
between your birth record, Social Security
card and any state you have ever held a
license in. Make sure you have the legal
documents that verify any name changes. Oh,
yes, and bring your checkbook…proposed new
licenses or ID cards may cost 2 to 3 times
more than they do today…unless the federal
government puts its money where its mouth
is.
