December 18, 2006... While other students chose jobs in the Blackstone area as part of this year’s Blackstone-Millville Job Shadow Day, one student set his sights on a potential career in public service on Boston’s Beacon Hill. Douglas Roberge, a sophomore at Blackstone – Millville Regional High School, and member of the Chargers Varsity Basketball team, contacted Senator Richard T. Moore (D-Uxbridge) to “shadow” the veteran lawmaker. Senator Moore, who has a long record of promoting civic education and encouraging young people to consider public service readily accepted. Roberge accompanied Senator Moore to the State House last week, participating in a “typical” twelve hour day. Roberge explained that the purpose of the job shadow assignment is observing what skills are needed for the job of a senator, testing my career interests, seeing how the subjects I am learning now are used in the working world and letting people know how a senator spends his day through this experience.” Following a personally guided tour of the State House by Senator Moore, Roberge attended a session of the Massachusetts State Senate, and then observed the Senator make a presentation on health care to Governor-Elect Deval Patrick’s transition working group on health issues. Senator Moore, who was a principal architect of the landmark Massachusetts Health Care Reform law, and chairman of the Legislature’s Committee on Health Care Financing presented a long list of issues that the incoming Patrick-Murray Administration needs to consider. One of the highlights of the day was Senator Moore’s appearance on New England Cable Network’s (NECN) “News Night” with host Jim Braude. Roberge accompanied Moore to the NECN studio and observed the interview focusing primarily on health care and the implementation hurdles faced by the Patrick-Murray Administration in the coming weeks. |
