Sen. Moore encourages students to participate in online essay contest

January 17, 2007...Sen. Richard T. Moore, D-Uxbridge, encourages students in grades 4-12 to participate in the 8th Annual League of Women Voters Online Student Essay contest. This year’s theme is “Making Democracy Work: Citizen’s Rights and Responsibilities.” This contest engages students and teachers to discuss the rights and responsibilities that citizens have to keep democracy strong and vibrant.

The League of Women Voters Citizen Education Fund has sponsored this essay contest for the past 8 years. The purpose of the essay contest is to focus on issues related to elections, voting, and citizen participation in government. It also offers students and their teachers an opportunity to combine discussions of elections, public policy and democracy with information about how to use the Web.

“Too many of our young people do not understand the responsibilities, or even the basic governing structure, of American society,” said Moore. “To encourage our youth to become active citizens in the future, we need to get them involved and better informed in government. I encourage students to take advantage of this contest to learn how they can make a difference in this democratic process.”

The contest is open to students in grades 4-12 and is broken down in to three groups, grades 4-5, 6-8, and 9-12, with essay questions specific to each group. U.S. savings bonds will be awarded to the first, second and third place winners in each grade grouping.

1st place - $500, 2nd place - $200, 3rd place - $100 and Honorable Mention - Certificate and names read at ceremony at Faneuil Hall

Classroom educational grants will be awarded to the teacher, advisor or leader who encouraged and assisted the participation of the winners in grades 4-12 . The grant will be awarded at the ceremony at Faneuil Hall.

The contest deadline is midnight, March 16, 2007 (All essays must be received by this date). Winners will be informed by the beginning of April, 2007. An awards ceremony will take place on April 29, 2007 at Faneuil Hall in Boston.
