Pol: Vaccinate all girls for STD--Shot could stop cervical cancer

February 2, 2007...Every sixth-grade girl in Massachusetts would be vaccinated against sexually transmitted strains of HPV that can cause cervical cancer under a State House proposal critics say pushes parents to talk about sex too soon. 

Sen. Richard T. Moore (D-Uxbridge) wants to add the human papillomarivus virus vaccine to chicken pox and measles immunizations as required shots to go to school. 

“It seems to me it’s one of the things a parent can do to prevent their child from a potentially fatal illness,” he said. 

Gardasil, approved in June by the Food and Drug Administration, protects against two strains of HPV that cause 70 percent of cervical cancer cases. It also protects against 90 percent of genital warts cases.
