Toxic Use Reduction grants available to municipalities, local groups

April 26, 2007...The Toxics Use Reduction Institute (TURI) at UMass Lowell is seeking proposals from non-profit or environmental organizations, municipal departments, or agencies in the state for its 2008 community grant program, according to Sen. Richard T. Moore, D-Uxbridge.

“The grants provided by the Institute will help communities and organizations reduce toxic chemical use to promote a healthier workplace and neighborhood,” said Moore. “I encourage the community organizations and municipal agencies to apply for these grants that will improve working conditions in businesses and benefit the lives of residents.” 

Now in its 13th year, the goal of the TURI grant program is to help organizations raise awareness of the hazards of toxic chemical use and introduce safer alternatives within their neighborhoods.

Non-profit community or environmental organizations, municipalities and departments, youth organizations, health centers, environmental organizations, neighborhood associations, public interest groups and academic institutions are encouraged to apply. 

The deadline to submit proposals for consideration and all supporting material is June 29, 2007. This year, TURI will award the grants up to $1,000 for small projects and up to $15,000 for larger projects 

Toxics Use Reduction Institute at UMass Lowell provides the resources and tools to help Massachusetts companies and communities make the Commonwealth a safer place to live and work. Established by the State’s Toxics Use Reduction Act of 1989, TURI provides research, training, technical support, laboratory testing services and grant programs to reduce the use of toxic chemicals while enhancing the economic competitiveness of businesses.
