Lance Cpl. W. Ryan McMillan is serving overseas in Al Taqqadum, Iraq for approximately 15 months, but the Massachusetts State flag brings him closer to home as he works on Humvees. The flag, which hangs in McMillan’s tent, was donated by Sen. Richard T. Moore, D-Uxbridge. Kathy McMillan of Northbridge emailed Sen. Moore after her son, a motor transport mechanic in the Marine Corps, asked her if she could send him a Massachusetts state flag. Not knowing where to get the flag, Kathy contacted her senator. Although the state does not provide the flags on a complimentary basis, Sen. Moore purchased the flag with his own funds calling it a gesture of support for the courage and sacrifice of United States service men and women serving in Iraq, Afghanistan and other trouble spots in the world. Senator Moore mailed the flag to Lance Cpl. McMillan with the history of the flag. He also told him that while not every American is happy about the President’s leadership and the overall conduct of the war in Iraq, that he and his fellow Marines should know that there is universal support for the troops and prayers for their success and safe return. Upon receiving the flag, McMillan emailed the senator thanking him for the flag and told him, “…this flag brings me closer to home as well as raises my spirits of returning to our great state of Massachusetts safely.” |
