Senate President appoints Sen. Moore to key health policy commissions

May 22, 2007... Recently, Sen. Richard T. Moore, D-Uxbridge, has been appointment by Senate President Therese Murray, D-Plymouth, for two prominent positions dealing with the state’s health insurance program. In addition to serving as the Senate representative to negotiate with the federal government concerning the MassHealth demonstration waiver, Moore will also take an important position on the MassHealth Payment Policy Advisory Council. 

“It gives me special pleasure to receive these appointments because providing access to affordable health care is currently a major focus for our state,” said Moore. “I was glad to have been chosen to participate in these discussions. It is my hope that through my work, we will be able to further provide quality health care to all our citizens in the state.”

The passage of the state’s landmark health care reform law not only allowed the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services to grant Massachusetts an extension on the Demonstration Project, but also calls for a Senate and House representatives to participate in all negotiations with the federal Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services concerning the MassHealth demonstration waiver. 

As a member of the MassHealth Payment Policy Advisory Board, Moore along with other board members, including providers, government, Mediciad payers and policy advisors, will review and evaluate rates and payment systems by the office of Medicaid and recommend Medicaid rates and rate methodologies. 

Sen. Moore was a key author of the comprehensive health care reform law and an serves as Senate Chairman of the Committee on Health Care Financing. He has gained wide respect and acclaim for his work on patient safety, patient’s rights, school-based health, homeland security, and a variety of other issues.
