State agencies offer disaster assistance to mill fire victims

Patrick/Murray Administration to also seek Federal aid

July 22, 2007...Members of the Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency (MEMA) Disaster Recovery Staff and representatives of various other state agencies including the Executive Office of Labor Workforce Development, Executive Office of Health & Human Services, Department of Transitional Assistance, Department of Mental Health, Division of Career Services, Division of Unemployment Assistance, Division of Insurance, and Office of Small Business & Entrepreneurship will be offering disaster assistance and information for the more than 300 employees of the 65 businesses severely impacted by the July 21st General Alarm Fire at Bernat Mill complex on Depot Road in Uxbridge. The Disaster Assistance Center will be available at the Uxbridge Town Hall, 21 South Main Street, Uxbridge, MA beginning Monday, July 23rd from 9:00AM until 6:00PM for an undetermined period.

The Patrick/Murray administration has sent a letter requesting the Small Business Administration (SBA) to declare a disaster, which is a critical step in receiving SBA assistance. Beginning July 22nd, SBA representatives will be in Uxbridge conducting a Preliminary Disaster Assessment to determine the scope and impact of the event.

The Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency (MEMA) is the state agency responsible for coordinating federal, state, local, voluntary and private resources during emergencies and disasters in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. MEMA provides leadership to: develop plans for effective response to all hazards, disasters or threats; train emergency personnel to protect the public; provide information to the citizenry; and assist individuals, families, businesses and communities to mitigate against, prepare for, and respond to and recover from emergencies, both natural and man made.
