Local business participates in “Made in Massachusetts Day” at the State House
July
27,
2007... Sen. Richard T. Moore, D-Uxbridge, and Reps. Paul Kujawski, D-Webster, and Jennifer M. Callahan, D-Sutton, welcomed Gary and Judi Vaillancourt to the State House for the 3rd Annual Made in Massachusetts Day.
The Vaillancourts are the owners of Vaillancourt Folk Art (VFA) in Sutton. It is one of the last remaining Christmas ornament and collectibles makers in the country. Unlike most Christmas collectibles, which are manufactured overseas, Vaillancourt chalkware figures are still made by hand at the VFA studio at Manchaug Mills in Sutton. Visitors can tour behind-the-scenes as artists hand-paint more than 300 different versions of Santa Claus and Father Christmas figures.

Op-Ed:
Special Development Districts – A
sound
tool to
address Massachusetts’s
infrastructure
needs
by Sen. Richard T. Moore
July 26, 2007...Our State and municipal budgets are under tremendous financial strain. As the recently released Transportation Finance Commission report demonstrates, Massachusetts has a back log of between $15 billion and $20 billion in transportation infrastructure improvements. This is not to mention the needs of aging water and sewer systems across the state, and other crucial municipal expenses like schools and employee health care. With these financial realties and our anemic revenue picture, it is clear that Massachusetts needs to think creatively about funding options for infrastructure improvements, particularly when it is these improvements that are going to allow our cities and towns to grow their tax bases.

Shine a light on medical mistakes
by MetroWest Daily News Editorial Staff
July 22, 2007..."First, do no harm," often attributed to Hippocrates, is a goal modern medical professionals surely embrace. But harm comes to patients in hospitals every day, and often it is avoidable harm. Infections are spread from patient to patient. Poor communication of patient needs between medical staff can result in bad drug interactions - or much worse.

Activists want to raise the minimum employer contribution from 33 percent to 50 percent of premium costs and employee-participation from 25 percent to at least 50 percent in employer-sponsored insurance. Businesses face financial penalties for not meeting those thresholds.

Blue Cross to scrap policy with low employer contribution
Firm: Patrick feared harm to state's plan
By Jeffrey
Krasner
Boston Globe
July 13, 2007...In an about-face, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Massachusetts said it is scrapping a new policy that would have allowed owners of small businesses to contribute just one-third of the cost of their employees' health plan premiums.
Blue Cross said it made the change at the request of Governor Deval L. Patrick , who told the firm that such low premium contributions would hurt efforts to extend health insurance to all residents under the state's healthcare revamp law. Prior to the new policy, which took effect July 1, the insurer required a minimum 50 percent contribution to premiums from employers with 50 or fewer workers.

Going national
Candidates may learn from Massachusetts’ experience
by Telegram & Gazette Editorial Staff July
9, 2007...With a year and a half remaining before Election Day, the presidential campaign has tended to meander into such trivialities as car-top dog carriers and $1,200 haircuts. However, 13 years after the Clinton administration health care initiative collapsed under its own weight, coverage for uninsured Americans appears to be moving up on the agenda.

Moore votes to boost local revenue through
investment in state pension system
July
9, 2007... The Senate recently approved legislation that would put underperforming local pension systems into the state’s pension fund to produce a greater return on investments. The proposal would allow the state to review the investment performance of local pension funds. Those funds would be rolled into the state system if their assets are less than 65 percent of their liability payments to retirees and also have an average10-year rate of return at least two percent less than the state’s current rate of 10.51 percent.
