Alicea and Moore announce state cultural grants to local communities

September 20, 2007...Representative Geraldo Alicea (D-Charlton) and Senator Richard T. Moore (D-Uxbridge) today announced that grants totaling over $15,000 have been awarded to cultural organizations in the towns of Oxford ($5690) and Southbridge ($9720) by the Massachusetts Cultural Council (MCC). This support provides each town with grant money to be used for a wide range of educational and cultural experiences for children as well as members of the community.

Representative Alicea said, "The Massachusetts Cultural Council does a vital service to expand arts and humanities throughout the Commonwealth. The towns of the 6th Worcester District will be well served by this funding."

“These local grants play a significant role in our community’s cultural and economic life,” said Moore. “It’s the local volunteers and councils who really make this system work. They make limited resources go as far as possible, and they make the tough decisions about which projects should be supported. Thanks to them, the arts, sciences, and humanities are part of everyday lives in every community across the state.”

The MCC is a state agency that promotes excellence, access, education and diversity in the arts, humanities and sciences, in order to improve the quality of life for all Massachusetts residents and contribute to the economic vitality of our communities. The MCC is committed to creating a central place for the arts, sciences and humanities in the everyday lives of communities across the Commonwealth. The MCC pursues this mission through a combination of grants, services, and advocacy for nonprofit cultural organizations, schools, communities, and artists.
