State provides relief to Uxbridge for Bernat Mill Complex Fire

October 12, 2007...The Legislature today passed a supplemental budget that includes $577,000 to cover costs associated with the Bernat Mill Complex Fire this past July in Uxbridge. This eight-alarm fire destroyed more than 60 businesses and also required the resources of 66 area fire departments.

“I am grateful to the Senate President and the Speaker for joining together to assist Uxbridge and other communities that were affected by the fire,” said Moore. “I also want to commend the local officials who put together the extensive documentation necessary to secure this funding. This important appropriation will help alleviate some of the response costs that the town and other communities incurred throughout the disaster. Additionally, as an Uxbridge taxpayer, I am pleased that the abatement will relieve citizens of the mill’s property tax burden.”

These funds will be used to alleviate costs including public safety expenses for the town and other communities, lost property tax revenue and school department losses.

The supplemental budget now goes to Gov. Deval L. Patrick for his consideration.

Sen. Moore has established a special section on his website at www.senatormoore.com/uxbridge for citizens to visit and obtain relevant information.
