October 12, 2007.... Sen. Richard T. Moore (D-Uxbridge) welcomed members of the Douglas Historical Society to the State House for the presentation of a $31,000 Massachusetts Preservation Project Fund (MPPF) grant from the Massachusetts Historical Commission. Secretary of State William Galvin, chair of the Commission, joined Sen. Moore for the presentation.

The Douglas Historical Society restoration of the E.N. Jenckes Store was one of 18 projects awarded a MPPF grant in Round 13 of the program. Patricia McNulty, vice president and corresponding secretary of the Historical Society, noted that the crucial funding will help repair and preserve a monitor skylight in the museum and prevent further water damage to the structure and its historical content.

Sen. Moore applauded both the Society and town of Douglas for their efforts to preserve historical landmarks in their community. “The town, just like the Historical Society, has managed to make great use of its historical assets. Many historical buildings are functioning today as apartments, store fronts, and restaurants. This is a true testament to a community embracing their past while still moving forward and looking toward the future. This funding will allow the Douglas Historical Society to continue this trend, and make the necessary repairs to this significant museum,” said Sen. Moore.

The MPPF is a state-funded matching grant program established in 1984 to support the preservation of properties, landscapes, and sites listed in the State Register of Historic Places. By providing assistance to historic cultural resources owned by nonprofit or municipal entities, the Massachusetts Historical Commission hopes to ensure their continued use and integrity.
