Supplemental budget includes $737,000 for Southbridge Armory

October 12, 2007...Yesterday, Sen. Richard T. Moore, D-Uxbridge, Rep. Geraldo Alicea, D-Charlton and their legislative colleagues passed a supplemental budget that included $737,000 to reimburse the Town of Southbridge for the purchase of the Southbridge Armory. The Armory, which the town purchased from the Commonwealth in 2004, has been renovated and reopened as the Southbridge Community Center.

“I am pleased that my colleagues and I in the Legislature were able to provide Southbridge with this crucial reimbursement that will allow the Center to continue effectively serve the residents,” said Moore. “This appropriation will give the town an opportunity to expand their community-based programming while ensuring that the armory will remain a valuable asset to the citizens of Southbridge.”

“I commend Speaker DiMasi, Senate President Murray and Governor Patrick for their assistance in getting the money that the town of Southbridge rightly deserves,” said Rep. Alicea, “This funding will is critical for the town to invest in critical upgrades of the facilities as well as new and exciting programs for the use of the residents of Southbridge.”

Over the last three years, the Community Center has become a multipurpose facility for the residents of Southbridge. It has been used to launch after school programs for students as well as the summer antiviolence prevention programs facilitated by the Southbridge Police Department. The Community Center is also set up to serve as an emergency facility in times of crisis or natural disaster.
