Moore, Senate approve new community service efforts for the Commonwealth
November 21, 2007...In Tuesday’s formal session, Sen. Richard T. Moore, D-Uxbridge, and his colleagues in the Senate enacted legislation which will establish a new community service force in Massachusetts and address unmet needs in cities and towns. The “Commonwealth Corps” will recruit college students, professionals and retirees to volunteer on a full-time and part-time basis. “This legislation acknowledges and promotes the benefits of volunteerism,” Senate President Therese Murray, D-Plymouth. “It creates an active and renewable resource of individuals to help communities in need.” “The Commonwealth Corps will be a great asset to many of the cities and towns throughout Central Massachusetts,” said Moore. “The program will afford many residents the opportunity to build stronger, more cohesive communities. I was pleased to have worked with my colleagues to bring this program to fruition.” The program, to be overseen by the Governor’s Office, will seek to enroll 1,000 volunteers to provide services for the elderly, the homeless, after-school programs, municipal projects and other social and community needs. |
