Sen. Moore and Sen. Chandler host meeting regarding Commonwealth’s role in disaster aftermath

November 27, 2007...On Monday, December 3, 2007, Sen. Richard T. Moore, D-Uxbridge, will join with Sen. Harriette Chandler, D-Worcester, local officials, and business leaders from the Blackstone Valley to discuss what the state can do to help small business following a disaster such as July’s Bernat Mill fire.

“This is a great opportunity for us to find out what we did right, but, more importantly, find out where we may have gone wrong,” said Moore. “The Bernat Mill response can act as a measuring stick and the information gained at this meeting will hopefully lead to a more comprehensive legislative package aimed at focusing the Commonwealth’s efforts following a disaster of this nature.”

In the aftermath of the massive mill fire, state and local officials have collaborated to relocate businesses, school programs, and plan for future economic development opportunities. Also, in October, the Legislature authorized $577,186 to provide relief related to damages associated with the fire, including costs incurred by those 66 surrounding communities that responded. Further alleviating financial burdens to the Town of Uxbridge, the Legislature also recently authorize the town to abate the property taxes associated with the Complex.

The meeting is open to the public and will be filmed for Uxbridge Cable Access.

For more information on the Bernat Mill Complex fire and the Commonwealth’s response, Sen. Moore has created a special section on his web site. It is available at www.senatormoore.com/uxbridge
