Sen. Moore encourages residents to participate in essay contest
December 12, 2007 ... The League of Women Voters has announced their 9th Annual Online Student Essay Contest, and Sen. Richard T. Moore, D-Uxbridge, is encouraging those in grades 4-12, as well as Massachusetts residents who are 18-24 years old, to participate. This year’s theme is “Making Democracy Work: Vote 2008,” and challenges students and residents to address the upcoming presidential election. This is part of the League’s effort in 2008 to encourage young voters to think critically about the election and to be involved in the electoral process. “It is important that young voters fully understand the impact of this upcoming election and appreciate the impact their vote can have on the outcome,” said Moore. “In order for the youth to become more active citizens and prepare them to become the leaders of tomorrow, it essential that they stay informed today. I encourage students and young adults throughout my district to take advantage of this opportunity to learn about the numerous candidates and the 2008 election in general.” The League of Women Voters has sponsored this essay contest for the past 9 years. The purpose of the contest is to focus on issues related to elections, voting, and citizen participation in government. It also offers students and their teachers an opportunity to combine discussions of elections, public policy and democracy with information about how to use the Web. The contest deadline is midnight, March 4, 2008 (All essays must be received by this date). Winners will be informed by the end of March, 2008. An awards ceremony will take place on April 13, 2008 at Faneuil Hall in Boston. For complete contest information, including rules, prizes, and essay questions, go to the League of Women Voters of Massachusetts website at www.lwvma.org.
