Moore announces Council on Aging grants

January 11, 2008 ... Councils on Aging (COA) throughout the Worcester & Norfolk District will soon be receiving significant state funds from the Executive Office of Elder Affairs, according to Sen. Richard T. Moore, D-Uxbridge.

“Each of these valuable programs contributes a great deal to the welfare of the area’s seniors,” said Moore. “I am particularly grateful that this vital state funding will afford each COA a greater ability to expand or continue their services. Any available funding is such an important asset, given the limited resources available throughout the state. I commend our COAs on doing a wonderful job, and I know these grants will provide for continued success.”

Formula Grants are calculated on a $6.50 per elder basis, which is the population over 60 based on the 2000 census, with the minimum grant award being $3,300. Each COA determines its own priorities for expenditures from a broad range of eligible costs established by Elder Affairs.

In FY08, the Legislature authorized an additional $335,000 which will provide all COA programs with a funding increase of 3.2% over FY07.
