Sen. Moore discusses importance of medical errors legislation

January 11, 2008 ... In a State House briefing consisting of health care advocates, legislative aides, and officials from the Consumer Health Quality Council, Sen. Richard T. Moore, D-Uxbridge, led discussion of his legislation to reduce hospital acquired infections.

“I appreciate that some hospitals throughout the Commonwealth have taken the initiative to implement such bold steps to reduce the threat of hospital acquired infections, but there is still room for improvement” said Moore. “The quality of care provided and the ultimate safety of the health care consumer is of utmost concern. Hospital acquired infections cost millions of dollars and hundreds of preventable deaths in Massachusetts.”

The discussion, entitled “Quality Care Saves Lives”, surrounded S. 1277 and H. 2226, An Act Promoting Healthcare Transparency and Consumer-Provider Partnerships, of which Sen. Moore is the lead sponsor in the Senate. The legislation, currently before the Joint Committee on Public Health, aims to improve health care quality and cost by requiring hospitals to report their rates of medical errors and hospital acquired infections in addition to giving patients and families other important tools to protect themselves against devastating, yet preventable, adverse medical outcomes.
