Moore announces grant funding for Mendon

February 12, 2008 ... With support from the United States Department of Agriculture Forest Service, the Department of Conservation and Recreation’s (DCR) Urban and Community Forestry Program has awarded grants to the Town of Mendon to support tree and forestry projects, according to Sen. Richard T. Moore, D-Uxbridge.

“I applaud the Administration for awarding these grants to Mendon, and in turn revitalizing Founders Park and preparing Mendon for access to essential recovery funds in the event of an emergency," said Moore. "The preservation and creation of green areas throughout the Commonwealth has an undeniably positive impact on our quality of life, and I commend Mendon’s officials for taking the initiative to seek this funding."

Mendon will be receiving a $1,500 grant combined with a $500 local match in order to develop an urban forest storm mitigation management plan. In addition, the town will also receive a $2,000 grant with an $11,350 local match in order to revitalize historic “Founders Park” by planting trees and landscaping the park according to the original site plans.

Across the Commonwealth, a total of $112,430 has been awarded for the projects, with $65,130 from the US Forest Service and $47,300 from DCR’s MassReLeaf Trust. The trust is designed to foster partnerships between business, government, and nonprofit groups for the planting and care of public trees to improve community environments and the overall quality of life. The trust is managed by DCR’s Urban and Community Forestry Program; its funding comes from various public and private sources.
