Moore to release medical malpractice report at committee hearing
Sen. Richard T. Moore, D-Uxbridge, will be testifying at Tuesday’s Judiciary Committee Hearing regarding medical malpractice legislation. As part of his testimony, Sen. Moore will release a medical malpractice report drafted by Dr. Peter Smulowitz, an emergency room physician at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and Saint Luke’s Hospital, who has been working in Sen. Moore’s office as a health policy fellow. The current medical liability system is a significant impediment to achieving safety, transparency, and quality in health care today. Achieving real gains in these areas requires a complete overhaul of the fundamental way in which health care providers and malpractice insurers assume responsibility for errors and in which patients are compensated for injuries resulting from medical errors. Such an overhaul can be achieved in Massachusetts with the establishment of “early disclosure and compensation programs” in the Commonwealth, akin to the recently established programs in Michigan and Illinois. A detailed summary of these programs, as well as the inherent failures of the current tort system, is contained in the full report “Restoring Value and Trust in our Health Care System”. This report will be released as part of Sen. Moore’s testimony and will be available following the hearing at www.senatormoore.com/health. Media interested in attending the hearing should enter through the Ashburton Park Entrance to the State House. |
