Moore continues fighting for 40B reform

March 28, 2008 ... During Thursday’s formal session, Sen. Richard T. Moore, D-Uxbridge, continued his efforts to reform affordable housing laws in the Commonwealth, particularly Chapter 40B. During debate on H 4594, An Act Financing the Production and Preservation of Housing for Low and Moderate Income Residents, Sen. Moore spoke in favor of a bi-partisan amendment to increase the percentage of affordable units in a 40B development from 25 percent to 33 percent.

“I have heard from people in my communities, both local officials and residents, who have been outraged by the work of developers,” said Moore during debate in the Senate Chamber. “The current law does not provide an adequate balance for local officials to effectively meet the needs of their community and develop it appropriately. Local officials have to play a greater role in this process.”

While the amendment was ultimately not adopted, Sen. Moore continues to work with his colleagues to advance similar legislation which he has filed. S 767, An Act Relative to Reforming Chapter 40B, is currently before the Joint Committee on Housing.
