Moore delivers FY09 Chapter 90 Highway funds for district communities

April 3, 2008 ... Sen. Richard T. Moore, D-Uxbridge, recently announced news from the Patrick Administration that local transportation aid funding will total $150 million in FY09. Communities throughout Sen. Moore’s district will receive a combined total of approximately $4.3 million in Chapter 90 funds.

“This vital local aid allows our municipalities to maintain and improve their local infrastructure with a great deal of flexibility and local control,” said Moore. “It is no secret that the Commonwealth is facing a tough budget year, but we are still committed to providing these resources to equally strained municipalities. Despite dim revenue pictures, all sources of local aid have been maintained, and some areas have even seen increases.”

Local allocations totaling $4,296,548 are:

Bellingham:  $383,320
Blackstone: $179,909
Douglas:  $269,622
Dudley:  $317,628
Hopedale:  $122,876
Mendon:  $200,527
Milford:  $611,348
Millville:  $76,155
Northbridge:  $321,669
Oxford: $379,671
Southbridge:  $377,588
Sutton:  $333,611
Uxbridge:  $358,761
Webster:  $363,863

Chapter 90 funding is the portion of state gas tax revenue that is distributed to cities and towns. Each year, Chapter 90 funding is allocated to cities and towns based on a formula that takes into account the number of miles of local roadway, population and the employment rate in a given community. The funding is reimbursed to the communities on approved transportation projects as construction unfolds.

Chapter 90 allocations may be used for the following purposes:

  • Maintenance, repair, improvement and construction of town and county ways and bridges;
  • Sidewalks, bikeways and other eligible enhancement projects;
  • Salt storage sheds and public use off-street parking;
  • Engineering services related to highway transportation enhancement;
  • Care, repair, storage, replacement, purchase, and leasing of road building machinery, equipment and tools;
  • Installation and maintenance of direction and warning signs; and
  • Improvements to unpaved ways.
